The Anti-oxidant Benefits Of Grape Skin Extract Are Extremely Powerful

January 4, 2010 · Posted in grapes · Comment

Grape skin extract contains the most marvelous anti-oxidant benefits, resveratrol which is found in its highest concentration in red wine, is this particular anti-oxidant. What a delicious way to get your daily dose, drink a glass of red wine!

Hundreds of generations of people living to ripe old ages in Europe, led to this amazing discovery. These populations suffer less cancers, less heart disease and less of all the dread diseases which plague, for arguments sake the Americans. They also suffer from lower stress levels, age slower and are generally speaking a darn sight happier. This has been proven to be because of millennium long histories of daily red wine consumption.

It is amazing how many health benefits are contained in drinking just one glass of red wine on a daily basis. The way this wine is made is very simple, the red grapes are grown and when they are ripe, harvested. The grapes remain whole and are fermented with yeast, the skins and pips go into this brew. Grape skins are filled to the brim with plant polyphenols, of which resevratrol is the most powerful. Polyphenols are naturally produced by the grape to protect them from disease and this is what they do for us when they are consumed.

Drinking of wine has been long associated with health benefits that can’t be found by any other alcoholic drink. Beer causes all types of health issues and is simply bad news for your liver and your gut. Brandy is just as bad, but wine, wine is the precise opposite. It’ll in fact shield you from some of the infirmities that you are susceptible to.

Heart protection has already been highlighted in detail, and so have the antioxidants that are presented in red wine that inspire natural detoxifications to enhance the body systems. What has not been announced is the capability of the wine to lower the chance of getting diabetes. With a standard glass, you do not have to stress about your blood sugar levels becoming bothersome in the future.

As far as cholesterol levels are concerned, wine drinking in moderation inspires the levels of high density lipoproteins to rise which is good cholesterol. Likewise it lowers the levels of low density lipoproteins, the bad cholesterol that clogs the arterial walls therefore inflating the blood pressure.

Pat Malcolm our expert of the day, writes:

Historically, muscadine grape vines and the resulting fruit were discovered and recognized as a very important horticultural product, found growing in huge populations and proportions in the United States from Delaware southward along the Atlantic Seaboard. The first record of muscadine grape vine occurrence was posted in the ship logbook in the year 1524 by the navigator Giovanni de Varrazzano, who was hired as a captain from Florence, Italy by the king of France to explore and report on the inhabitants and the habitat of the New World. Captain Verrazzano described a big “white grape” (scuppernong) that was growing in great profusion at a valley in Cape Fear, N.C.

Not only were muscadine grape vines used by the American Indians for fresh fruit and juice, but they were also dried as raisins and preserved as winter snacks, as reported by Captain John Hawkins in 1565 from his sailing records from Florida.

In 1775, William Bartram in his book, Travels, reported muscadine grape vines that he had observed were virogously growing near Mobile, Al. “when ripe they are of various colours, and their juice sweet and rich.” He reported that American Indians actively preserved these grapes as raisins by drying them over gentle fires and later in the sun and air and “store them up for provision,” for winter meals.

Kathleen Sullivan our expert of the day, writes:

What do Virginia wine and England have in common? Answer: history and today’s interest in pursuing quality wine. This year is the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Jamestown by the English settlers. Several events have been planned to commemorate the founding of Jamestown in 1607. One of the events planned will be the tasting of Virginia wines at Vinopolis in London. The theme is “Virginia, First in Wine.” “First in Wine” refers to the quality of Virginia wines and to the established fact that Virginia was the first place in the new world for the English to attempt the cultivation of grapes and winemaking. In February, a number of Virginia wines were judged at White Hall Vineyards in a wine tasting event. The purpose was to choose wines to go to England for a tasting. On April 30, Virginia will present wines at a VIP invitation only tasting at Hampden House (a historical house) in the middle of Chiltern, England. On May 2, the Virginia wines will be tasted at Vinopolis, a world wine center in London. Will the Mother Country be impressed?

A Really Basic Intro To The Major Kinds of Wine Making

September 19, 2009 · Posted in grapes · Comment

Wine making is a really old and traditional and people have been wine making around the world for hundreds of years. There are lots of different parts to wine making though and there are certain steps taken depending on the sort of wine you are making. Anyone can do wine making and there are many resources available for those learner wine makers.

The major purpose of wine making is to convert grape juice into wine which is an alcoholic beverage. This happens by reason of wine yeast. The yeast needs sugar to grow and as it consumes yeast it produces alcohol. Above and beyond alcohol the yeast will also produce carbon dioxide and other flavor compounds. It is the yeast that makes the wine what it is as well as all of the different aromas and tastes.

When making white wine and red wine there is one large difference. This has to do with the incorporation of the grape skins into the fermentation for red wine. White wine can be made from white grapes or red grapes but only the juice is used for fermentation. With red wine the skins are left into the juice and as the alcohol concentration increases the color is extracted from the grape skin and causes the wine to be a dark red color.
