Pergola Plans - Build it yourself
Daniel Lazaj our expert of the day, writes:
If you have been thinking of building a pergola, you have probably been looking around and seen kits available online. Some of these kits can be expensive, and you will still need to put them together. If you have set a budget, and a pergola kit exceeds it, build your own, it can save you money, and more than likely meet your budget.
If you are handy with tools, and you enjoy building your own projects, this will not be very difficult to build. The first step will be to get some plans. There are many sites online offering free pergola plans, you can also buy plans online for a good price. Having plans is very important step you must take to build a great looking pergola.
Building your own pergola is not difficult, and can usually be done during one or two weekend. Once you get your pergola plans that will work for the location you have chosen, you will want to go to your building department. Weather you will be building your own pergola from plans, or using a pergola kit, you will need to check with your building department for any permits you will need for this project.
If you don’t feel capable of taking on this project, consider hiring a handyman. Once you have the pergola plans you want, and the material, you can show them to different handyman to get some estimates for this project. All pergola plans will come with a material list, this will give you an idea how much this project will cost. Adding the price of the material and the handyman’s price to build, you will be able to compare to pergola kits, this will give you a good idea of the savings. This is another option you might want to think about to get the pergola you want, and save some money.
To finish off the project add climbing roses or vines to your pergola. Once your pergola is completed it will make a great focal point to your patio, garden, or backyard. It will also be a great place to relax and entertain. Having a pergola will not only increase the value of your home, you will have your special retreat for many, many years.
No Relationship Between Bonsai Kitten And Bonsai Trees. Bonsai Cats - Just Fiction
Imre Feher our expert of the day, writes:
The bonsaikitten.com scandal. Raising bonsai cats is just a joke; bonsai trees are reality and an Art.
The depictions and pictures on raising bonsai cats on the website bonsaikitten.com are obviously just jokes; Nature cannot be forced to impossibilities.
Basically the articles on the website talk about little kittens put in an angular shaped glass, and after a time the kittens grow up into bonsai cats of angular shape.
The website details the technological process, illustrated with manipulated texts and pictures. All what we see there is false, just a nightmare of a sick mind.
Animal protecting organizations and people passionately protest against this website, but even FBI cannot do anything, the website still has been existing. The American student who has created it under a false name is unknown. It is to be feared that credulous people or children could try the first steps of producing bonsai kittens.
A huge number of protesting and circulars have been published in order to protect bonsai kitten and against the website. Endeavors to put a “Just a joke” notice on the bonsai kitten website proved to be unsuccessful.
Growing Tomato Plants From Seeds
Bryan Murphy our expert of the day, writes:
Tomato plant can be grown anywhere in the world and is thus well known as the plant in every home garden. It has been estimated that almost 90 percent of the vegetable gardeners have this crop in their garden. This is because the tomato plant requires very little attention from the gardener during the time of growth. The important elements needed for perfect growth is enough sunlight, a little patience and adequate water.
Tomato is considered to be a summer crop. Select the tomato variety from the wide variety which is easily available. Always check with your neighbors, nursery professionals and other online sources to find the most dependable and disease resistant variety of tomatoes.
The soil is to be prepared well before starting off with the tomato growing process. It should be mixed well with compost and well rotten manure if you are using sandy soil. Super phosphates are recognized to be the best nourishment for appropriate growth. Another balanced fertilizer would be 6:3:2 which should be mixed well with the soil before the process. It is considered as the perfect alternative in case of any short supply of manure.
Are The Grapes Hanging Too High?
Ingrid Nirupama Grzeskowiak our expert of the day, writes:
Have you ever questioned yourself or worried if you were a person that was about to accomplish something really big? Are you having doubts about your abilities on a regular basis? Are you comparing yourself a lot to people you admire? Thoughts like that are a sure sign that you are playing small!
Thoughts like that have the tendency to diminish your own inner power. The way you think about yourself is reflected in your everyday life. All depends on your attitude. Each one of us has these feelings about being worthless from time to time, and some of us have them their whole lives and they aren’t even aware of them.
Self-worth is a big topic in personal development issues. Someone with poor self-worth does not allow himself to see that he can achieve anything worthwhile. He will always find a reason to not follow the path of success just because he has to prove to himself that he is worthless.

Bonsai, an Exquisite Japanese Art Form
Ray G Cunningham our expert of the day, writes:
The art of bonsai tending embraces the growing of miniature, usually in small trays, or small pots.
By precision pruning and growing them in small containers, it is practicable to retain their small forms.
It takes but a short time, to learn the basic art of pruning a bonsai tree and give you great satisfaction, but perhaps a lifetime to master the art.
Japanese, ’shin zen bi’ combines the three forces, beauty, truth and essence, as part of the philosophy,
behind their form of bonsai.
In their long quest for perfection, the Japanese aim for a perfectly natural, though miniaturized look to the tree, or plant. Their bonsai look as though they grew that way, without human help. That is the aim.
The Chinese tend toward the artistic and more imaginative with their bonsai, growing them into Chinese lettering and mythical lifeforms, as well as wildlife. Personally, I much prefer the more challenging, but natural miniaturized Japanese form, as it is more pleasing to my eye and senses.
The bonsai art form goes back a long, long time.
Heirloom Vegetables – Part 1 - Tomatoes
Christy Wilhelmi our expert of the day, writes:
When I think of heirloom vegetables, romantic notions of windswept hillsides and fields of sunflowers come to mind. I picture a sturdy wooden table arranged with rustic linens and slender glasses of wine, each one catching a ray of sunlight and reflecting onto the summer palate of oranges, reds and yellows that make up a bowl of freshly prepared Caprese salad. There is nothing quite like the combination of heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and buffalo mozzarella cheese. Mix in a little olive oil, salt and pepper and you have the quintessential summer faire of the gods. Sure, you can make it with regular tomatoes, but the difference in flavor is like the difference between cheesecake and cardboard. Heirloom tomatoes provide exotic flavor, color and biodiversity to your life from garden to table.
By definition, an heirloom is something that is passed down from generation to generation, in hopes of preserving the memory of days gone by. In the case of heirloom tomatoes, varieties from around 100 years ago are still in circulation today thanks to thoughtful growers of yesteryear who carefully saved seeds and handed them down to their children. Seed banks and catalog companies that specialize in providing heirlooms to curious gardeners have opened the door to a world of variety ordinarily unavailable to the public.
The Benefits of Organic Composting
Paul Hata our expert of the day, writes:
Some of us may be hesitant in making and using compost. They find the task of making one troublesome and time consuming. Or they might have false perceptions of smelly compost piles and having such a messy process right in their backyards. While others would prefer buying their fertilizers, soil amendments or conditioners, and mulch from their garden stores to avoid all the hassle of reading about compost and actually making one.
Here are my top personal reasons for composting. I only hope that you move your butt out of that chair and begin your own compost pile before you reach number ten.
1.Free and readily available - The first reason I find composting highly worthwhile is the fact that the materials used are absolutely free and are readily available. Compare that with the ever rising costs of commercial fertilizers and other gardening products in the market today. All you need is a little extra effort to find the best materials for your compost pile, but otherwise, everything’s for free.
How to Alter a Deck Microclimate
Richard Vande Sompel our expert of the day, writes:
Shadows, sound and wind are environmental conditions that need to be considered in creating a design for the enjoyment of outdoor deck spaces. It is important for a homeowner to understand their influences during the different seasons. Through careful design techniques it is quite possible to improve upon the deck microclimate.
By altering prevailing winds and developing more surfaces that are able to collect and hold or even discharge heat, the deck can be much warmer or cooler than surrounding areas.
Different surfaces have variable abilities to reflect and absorb heat or radiant energy. Wet or dark colored surfaces tend to absorb more heat than dry or light colored ones. A matte surface tends to reflect very little heat while absorbing most of it. Most natural surfaces such as wood or stone are relatively heat absorbent.
The speed of wind has a profound effect upon the heat retention of objects and of the air mass in a space. The speed and extent that heat and sound spread out depend upon wind and its turbulence.
Head Lice Treatment - New Alternatives To Insecticides
Robert G. Knechtel our expert of the day, writes:
From an evolutionary standpoint, probably no other parasitic creature is more superbly suited to reside on the human body, specifically in hair on the head and nape of the neck, than the head louse. This tiny six legged nuisance sports two outsized front legs adapted to grasp the hair shaft, thus anchoring itself to penetrate skin and suck blood.
From a physical standpoint, head lice in and of themselves are harmless beyond the intense itching and scalp rash they produce. Often more harm comes from social ramifications - humiliation, teasing, ostracism and no-nits policies in some schools.
In recent years, the most frustrating aspect of treatment is the head louse’s growing resistance to common insecticides such as malathion, permethrin and pyrithrins. Ever adaptable, just as with bacteria and antibiotics, they are evolving to survive application of insecticides.
Head lice are passed from human to human only through contact or through sharing of intimate objects, bedding or apparel. Obviously the best defense is prevention requiring frequent washing of bedding and clothing in hot water during the school year. Sharing of combs, hats and clothing should be avoided.
